Get to Know the Tutors: Reagan Palmer

Hi everyone! Mary and Emma here. Over the next few posts, we'll be spotlighting some of our staff members in our Get to Know the Tutors series!

Reagan Palmer is one of our first-year tutors, as well as one of our resident women in STEM. She’s also just all-around awesome! This week, we’ll be sharing her Writing Center story!

Meet Reagan!

Reagan never thought she’d be a Writing Center tutor. In fact, she’s blazing a much different academic path than she ever expected.

When she came to MC as a freshman, she declared Biology / Pre-Med with her sights set on medical school. Over the course of her MC career, though, she developed two new loves: research of infectious diseases, bacteria, and viruses (she’s currently applying for PhD programs in Microbiology and Immunology), and the Writing Center.

Her Writing Center story started in Dr. Price’s English 101 class. “Once the semester was concluding, he asked if I would be interested in taking the English 398 course and becoming a tutor,” Reagan said. “I was actually very surprised when he asked, due to not being an English major or minor or anywhere near it. But, because I have always loved to write and have loved helping others write their papers, PowerPoints, or lab reports, I accepted – and am so glad that I did!”

Ever since she joined the Writing Center team, Reagan has found unexpected joy in meeting students she may not have met otherwise and helping them sharpen their writing skills. “As a tutor, I love getting to know more people from all different backgrounds and majors,” she said. “I love being able to boost confidence in writing, and also guide them on how to steadily improve it!”

“My favorite thing about the Writing Center is that there has always been a feeling of belonging and support,” Reagan said. “I have been on both sides of a session, as a client I always felt heard and supported by the tutor and always left feeling more confident that I did when I walked in.”

Reagan wishes more people knew that the Writing Center is a relaxing and welcoming spot for students not only to have tutoring sessions, but also to sit and study!

You can find her in the Writing Center 10-11 Mondays and Fridays, 11-2 Tuesdays, and 12-4 Thursdays. If she’s not there, you may find her in the lab or working on her PhD applications!

As Reagan’s WC story demonstrates, our tutors have a wide range of interests, specializations, and career pursuits. Students in different majors and programs sometimes feel like there’s not a place for them at the Writing Center – but we assure you, there’s a place here for everyone! Whether you’re working on an essay, an application, a presentation, or a lab report, we can help you with any project, any step of the way.

We can’t wait to see what you bring to the Writing Center! Come visit Reagan – or any of our other amazing tutors – and stay tuned for more tutor profiles!

See you soon,

Mary and Emma

The Writing Center is located on the first floor of the Leland Speed Library across from the Gore Art Gallery.
