The Writing Center Website Launches Today!

October 12, 2018

The Writing Center has done it again! Our new website is up, and stellar content is at your fingertips with the touch of a button:

https://www.mc.edu/writingcenter

With the “Schedule Appointment” and “Writing Center Blog” resources prominently featured on the front, the new site continues its focus on “a community that welcomes everyone, develops writing and thinking skills, cultivates ideas, and builds writers’ confidence.”

Now it is even easier for students to find a time and a tutor or to browse the resources and writing advice found on this blog. Today, through a quick tour, we’re going to take a look at how to navigate the site.

Schedule Appointment

This feature takes students directly to the sign in page for the Writing Center’s scheduling. First time visitors can register for an account by filling out a short information sheet. I find it easiest to make the email and password for this account the same as your email and password for your MC account.

Returning visitors can go straight to the schedule planner after logging in and click on a time slot next to a tutor’s name. White time slots are available, and colored are already booked. Students then fill out a brief eight questions about the class, professor, project, and what they need help with. They will then receive a confirmation email from the Writing Center.

Writing Center Blog

This button takes readers from the website to the blog. (You are here!) Writing advice, interviews with tutors, and the best encouragement for students can all be found here, but I may be partial.

At the bottom of the Home page, you will find the new website’s eight tabs. My personal favorite is the Staff page because it has all of the possible tutors you will encounter on one page where you can see their pictures and learn a little bit more about them than just their majors.

Services

We provide face-to-face and online tutoring, and this section of the website highlights how to make an appointment, whether online, by phone, over email, or in person by dropping by the Writing Center.

Hours & Location

The Writing Center’s weekday hours and the location of the Leland Speed Library are rounded out by a campus map and map of the first floor of the library, where the Writing Center is located.

Staff

This is my favorite page! It gives you a name and face for every staff member, including our fantastic receptionists. You can get to know a little bit more about our tutors and find the one who will be perfect for helping you with your lab report or your creative writing project!

Contact

On this page, you will find our Writing Center director, Dr. Price’s, contact information as well as our assistant director, Ms. Song’s contacts. They’re just the people to see if you have any questions about the Writing Center and what we do!

Student Resources

Students can find information about the Writing Center LibGuide, documentation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago/Turabian, etc.), and the Writing Proficiency Exam on this page. We even have two videos of our tutors explaining how everyone is welcome in the Writing Center and how even advanced writers can benefit from our tutors.

Faculty Resources

The new website is not just for students! This page lets faculty know what we offer at the Writing Center and how it can lead to their students’ success. Professors encouraging student interaction with the Writing Center is one of the most effective ways to educate students on the resources we provide. To engage with the Writing Center through a class visit, faculty can fill out a class visit request form directly from this page.

Events

The Writing Center is all around campus! The events on this page are just a sampling of the ways we promote writing and engage with students.

Social Media

Find the Writing Center on social media platforms! We are active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and this blog with daily or weekly updates. Our goal throughout social media is to continue to create a community that cheers on students as they complete any kind of writing, academic or otherwise.

Our hope is that this new website will provide resources in an easily-navigable format to students and faculty and will spur them on toward their writing goals.

If you’re beginning, in the middle of, or just finishing a paper, come see us!
