Meet the Newest Friendly Faces of the Writing Center | Part Two

I hope you are having a wonderful semester, readers!

In my last post I introduced you to a few of our new tutors. There are too many tutors to cover in just one post, though, so I have some more of them for a you to meet.

They are Chapman, Kelsi, Madeleine, Brandon, and Christine. Chapman is a new receptionist while all of the others are new tutors. These are all fun people who are there for you in the Writing Center, ready and willing to help you out.

Chapman Cooper

Where are you from?

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Why did you decide to become a receptionist?

I had friends in the writing center and knew it was a fun place.

Favorite thing about the writing center?

Working with the tutors and learning about them and trying to figure out how to match writers and tutors.

Favorite candy from the writing center candy bowl?

Kit Kats and Dum Dums

Dog or cat person?

Dog person. I have two dogs, a poodle and a lab.

Kelsi Baldwin

Where are you from?

I am from Florence, Mississippi.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I started tutoring because I love helping people achieve their goals. So many students are self-conscious of their writing abilities, and I hope to help these students realize their potential.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

The writing center has a calm and positive atmosphere. Also, all of the tutors are always so willing to help.

Favorite candy from the writing center candy bowl?

I absolutely love the red Starbursts.

Dog or cat person? I am a dog AND a cat person. When you have both, you truly have the best of both worlds.

Madeleine Lawrence

Where are you from?

I am from Massachusetts.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

English has always been my strength and I enjoy helping people, therefore I decided to start tutoring.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

My favorite thing about the writing center is helping foreign exchange students. Their passion, drive, and hardworking attitudes are very encouraging.

What is your favorite candy in the writing center candy bowl?

I like anything chocolate.

Are you a dog or a cat person?

I am definitely a dog person.

Brandon Blair

Where are you from?

Splunge, Mississippi

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

At my high school, students and friends would often bring me their papers for help! It was something I enjoyed doing, so when I learned that I could continue the opportunity in college, I was very excited and signed up!

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

Writing is something I am passionate about. When an author takes pen to paper, something a little magical happens. Ideas become words; the abstract becomes concrete, and a sense of power and creation is fostered by the writer. It’s really cool to witness!

What is your favorite candy in the writing center candy bowl?

Peppermints!

Are you a dog or a cat person?

Both are neat, but I don’t own one of either.

Christine Anderson

Where are you from?

I'm from Brandon, MS, less than half an hour down I-20 East.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I love helping people by figuring out what someone is really trying to say in their writing, then giving them different ways to express that. A lot of my friends work in the Writing Center, too, and I wanted to share that experience with them.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

The atmosphere is so friendly and warm, even if the AC is turned up a little too high. I love the interactions between the tutors and how we always help each other out.

What is your favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

Definitely the Dum Dums. I used to collect the wrappers when I was a kid, hoping to send them in and get a prize. I must have had at least forty at one point!

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

I love both very much, but cats have a special place in my heart. They're the perfect companion when you want to curl up with a good book or a movie!

There are more new tutors and receptionists for you to meet soon, but for now, thank you all for reading and have a great spring break!
