Meet the Newest Friendly Faces of the Writing Center | Part One

Hello, readers!

A new semester means new faces at the writing center, and this semester there are fifteen new faces. These students recently completed the preparation class, Practicum in Writing Consulting, so they come with a lot of training and experiences! Here are a few facts about them to help you get to know them before you see them around the writing center.

We’ll start by meeting five tutors in this post, and the rest will follow at later dates. For now, I am pleased to introduce Swayze, Damon, Abigail, Kennedy, and Katherine.

Swayze Elliott

Where are you from?

I am from Oxford, Mississippi.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I am an Education major, so I thought being exposed to numerous pieces of writing would be beneficial for me when I am a teacher!

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

I love the writing center’s relaxed environment. It is so welcoming and comforting!

What is you favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

Blue raspberry Dum Dums!

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dog! I love my King Charles Cavaliers!

Damon Wright

Where are you from?

I am from Hoover, Alabama.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I started tutoring because current tutor, Aaron Feazelle, and my former history teacher, Christian Pinnen, recommended me to look into the Writing Center and join the wonderful institution.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

I love the community aspect of the writing center. Everyone is nice and helpful all the time, and it is a good atmosphere to be around.

What is your favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

The Hershey’s with the rice things in them. Those are fire.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dogs. Cats are demons.

Abigail Lake

Where are you from?

I am from Madison, Mississippi.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

Writing is my passion, and I love seeing the power of words in my own writing as well as in others’ writing. But communicating effectively through writing is a skill, and it’s one I want to help students improve in and be confident in.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

Meeting new people (even though I’m a HUGE introvert).

What is your favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

Dum Dum suckers. #childhood

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dogs are adorable fluff balls sent from heaven to be our loyal companions. Cats...aren’t. But I still like them too.

Kennedy ZumMallen

Where are you from?

I am from Madison, Mississippi.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I love writing and helping people with writing, and I wanted the experience of working with people in a professional environment.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

The friendly atmosphere, the sense of community, and the opportunity to help people.

What is your favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

Dark chocolate Hershey’s Kisses.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Dog person if I have to pick, but it’s very, very close!

Katherine Parker

Where are you from?

I am from Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Why did you decide to start tutoring?

I decided to start tutoring because I enjoyed English 398: Practicum in Writing Consulting. I originally took the class because I thought it would be interesting as far as teaching me how to transfer my knowledge and skills in a kind and helpful manner to others. When I finished, I thought about it and decided to go ahead and become a tutor.

What is your favorite thing about the writing center?

My favorite thing so far about the writing center, I think, is the community. I've only been here for two or three weeks and already am building relationships and community with my fellow tutors that I know I probably wouldn't have had without the writing center.

What is your favorite candy from the bowl in the writing center?

My favorite candy from the bowl is the Hershey’s Kisses. I'm not picky about milk or dark chocolate because what I want depends on what kind of day I've been having.

Are you a cat person or a dog person?

Cats. Most definitely.
